Untuk membuat file terkompress di windows dapat kita lakukan secara langsung dengan menggunakan file kompresi diwindows(misal winrar/winzip). Pada sistem operasi linux, metode ini tidak dapat kita lakukan. Karena program kompresi di linux tidak memiliki pilihan untuk melakukan proteksi file yang akan dikompres (misal file-roller).
Metode lain untuk melakukan proteksi pada file yang akan kita buat adalah dengan menggunakan perintah gpg(encryption and signing tool). Misalnya kita memiliki file coba.zip. Untuk melakukan encryption dari file tersebut, dapat kita lakukan dengan perintah :
gpg -c coba.zip
Hasil dari perintah ini akan menghasilkan file baru coba.zip.gpg. File ini adalah file kita yang telah terproteksi. Untuk membuka kunci dari file coba.zip.gpg, dapat kita lakukan dengan perintah :
gpg coba.zip.gpg
